Many people expect budget laptops to be heavy and bulky, but the 3.2-pound Toshiba Portege R705-P25 puts that misconception to rest. This sleek 13.3-inch laptop, which is available exclusively at Best Buy, has a 2.26 GHz… Intel Core i3 processor, 4 GB of memory and a 500 GB hard drive. It also includes Intel’s Wireless Display (Wi-Di) technology so you can stream video content to a TV. Reviewers say the Toshiba Portege R705-P25 is a near-perfect blend of portability, performance and value. The laptop is easy to carry, and it’s one of the few ultraportable laptops that include an integrated optical drive. The chiclet-style keyboard earns high marks for comfort, and the glossy display resists glare and reflections better than most. Performance is good across the board. In some tests, the Toshiba laptop posts better scores than laptops costing much more. Battery life isn’t anything to write home about, lasting around four hours for most users. There’s also no Bluetooth, and the speakers are weak, according to reviews.

The HP Compaq Presario CQ62-209WM, sold at Walmart, won’t cost you much more than a netbook, but you’ll get a full-size 15.6-inch laptop. Reviewers say the Compaq laptop is a great deal for the price, given its solid… build and ample computing power for basic tasks. The speakers are good for a laptop in this price range, and experts say videos look great on the glossy display. Many owners also like that the subtle black design doesn’t scream “cheap laptop.” Of course, you’ll have to make some concessions when purchasing a sub-$400 notebook. The Compaq Presario CQ62-209WM doesn’t include a webcam or memory card reader, and it’s not the best choice for intensive computing tasks such as 3-D gaming or graphics work. It also comes with a large amount of bloatware, or trial software — owners say it takes at least an hour or two to uninstall it all.
